ORGSHIFT / STRATEGY TO RESULTS

What happens after your strategic plan is approved?

The harder work often starts here. Connecting strategic choices to action—and using evidence to decide what happens next.

Clear choices.Explicit capabilities.Meaningful evidence.Accountable decisions.

01 / THE EXECUTION GAP

A good plan can still
lose its way.

Often, the pieces exist. What’s missing is a clear connection between them—and a management rhythm that keeps those connections alive.

What feels familiar? Select a challenge.

The “missing middle” is the logic between a strategic commitment and the result it is meant to produce. Better reporting alone will not fill it.

02 / THE STRATEGY-TO-RESULTS MODEL

Make the logic visible.

Explore each connection. Together, they form a practical Strategy-to-Results Map—and a basis for testing whether your strategy is working.

Select a stage to explore the questions behind it.

03 / THREE PATHWAYS

One discipline.
Your operating reality.

The same Strategy-to-Results logic, applied to the responsibilities, constraints and reporting needs of your organization.

NSTRFOR NONPROFITS

Keep the mission connected
to the work.

For executive directors and CEOs, senior teams and boards managing strategic commitments with limited capacity.

  • Connect strategic choices, required capabilities, initiatives, evidence and intended results.
  • Make required capabilities and ownership explicit.
  • Use a manageable quarterly rhythm for management decisions and board reporting.
Explore Nonprofit Strategy to Results

Where NSTR can help

You have a reasonably current strategic plan, several priorities to manage, and regular reporting obligations to a board, funders or members. Reporting relies heavily on spreadsheets or presentations, and internal strategy capacity is limited.

Make capacity and accountability visible

Several priorities may rely on the same people, capabilities or funding. NSTR makes those relationships explicit so leadership and boards can see what delivery requires, where capacity is constrained, and what choices may be needed.

Keep strategy active and manageable

Confirm tests one important priority: the choices behind it, the capabilities it requires, the initiatives intended to deliver it, and whether evidence leads to decisions. Launch extends the map across relevant priorities, establishes ownership and measures, and sets up the management rhythm. Adapt uses quarterly evidence to interpret progress, document decisions and follow through, adjusting strategy or execution when needed.

Very small or volunteer-led organizations may need a lighter approach.

MSTRFOR MUNICIPALITIES

Connect your plans.
Manage shared priorities.

For CAOs, senior leadership teams and councils—particularly in smaller and mid-sized municipalities.

  • Connect the corporate strategic plan with other plans and priorities that compete for the same capabilities and resources.
  • Reveal shared capabilities, resources and cross-departmental dependencies.
  • Turn strategic progress into useful management and Council discussions.

Where MSTR can help

You have a current corporate strategic plan alongside other significant plans. Initiatives depend on the same people, funding or capabilities, while staff also carry day-to-day service responsibilities.

Make cross-plan dependencies visible

One initiative may contribute to several priorities. Several plans may rely on the same capability. MSTR makes these relationships explicit so management can identify competing demands and decide where intervention is needed.

Support management and governance

Confirm tests one important priority with the CAO and senior team. Launch extends the architecture across relevant plans and establishes management and Council views. Adapt uses quarterly evidence to address progress, dependencies, decisions and follow-through.

Within Adapt, strategy and execution adapt to changes in Council direction, community needs, financial circumstances and other conditions affecting commitments.

ESTRFOR ENTERPRISE

Turn strategic choices into operating action.

For owners, CEOs and senior leadership teams in privately held and mid-market businesses managing growth, performance and change in a shifting market.

  • Connect strategic choices to the capabilities, initiatives, evidence and intended results required to deliver them.
  • Make ownership, trade-offs and operational dependencies explicit.
  • Use a practical management rhythm to respond when performance, capacity or market conditions change.

Where ESTR can help

You have a reasonably current strategy and a small number of important priorities, but leadership attention is divided across day-to-day operations, customers, people, technology and emerging issues.

Connect strategic choices to operating realities

Strategic priorities may depend on the same leadership attention, capabilities, capital, technology or people. ESTR makes these dependencies and assumptions explicit so leaders can see what delivery requires and where market or operating conditions may demand a different choice.

Keep strategy usable as conditions change

Confirm tests one important strategic commitment: the choices behind it, the capabilities it requires, the initiatives intended to deliver it, the assumptions being made, the evidence that matters and who owns the decisions. Launch extends the architecture across the priorities that matter most, making capabilities, dependencies, measures and ownership explicit. Adapt uses regular evidence-based reviews to assess progress, test assumptions and decide what should continue, change, accelerate, receive additional support or stop.

Strategy or execution is adjusted when performance, capacity, customer needs, competitive conditions or other circumstances warrant.

All three pathways depend on a senior sponsor, clear ownership and a willingness to act on what the evidence reveals.

04 / HOW ORGSHIFT WORKS

Start with one priority.
Scale what works.
Build a lasting discipline.

Confirm uses one priority as a bounded test. Launch extends the architecture across the strategic commitments you need to manage. Adapt keeps it active through evidence, decisions, follow-through and adjustment.

01

Discovery

Explore your situation in a complimentary 30–45 minute conversation.

What’s involved

Discuss what prompted your interest, how you currently manage strategic progress, and the planning and reporting assets already in place.

The conversation is exploratory. Together, determine whether a focused Confirm engagement would be useful.

02

Confirm

Test one strategic commitment and your readiness to act.

What’s involved

A bounded test of the strategic choices, required capabilities, major initiatives, assumptions, evidence, intended result and ownership behind one commitment.

Focused document review, preparation with the ED or CAO, and an approximately 90-minute leadership workshop lead to a concise summary and recommended path forward.

That may mean proceeding, connecting existing pieces, or doing more foundational work first. Confirm has stand-alone value.

03

Launch

Extend the architecture and establish a manageable management rhythm.

What’s involved

Build and extend the Strategy-to-Results Map across relevant priorities. Clarify capabilities, assumptions and dependencies, establish ownership and measures, and configure supporting strategy-execution technology where appropriate.

Establish reporting views and the review rhythm. More substantial strategy development or alignment is separately scoped.

04

Adapt

Review evidence, decide, follow through and adapt.

What’s involved

Use quarterly evidence to review progress, risks and dependencies. Prepare concise reporting, make and document decisions, and assign owners and expected follow-up.

What should we continue, change, accelerate, support or stop?

Adapt strategy or execution when evidence or circumstances warrant. At least annually, revisit priorities, capabilities, initiatives, measures and assumptions.

Human-led.
Technology-enabled.

Management discipline comes first. A dedicated Cascade strategy execution platform supports priorities, initiatives, measures, ownership and reporting. Digital facilitation can help teams make the underlying connections explicit.

The technology helps people see what is happening, understand why, and decide what to do. It does not execute the strategy.
